Flying the Friendly Skies
On my recent trip to New York/London/Israel, I was flying from New York to London when I had an experience, reminiscent of one that I documented in Fearless Future (p.81). Once again, I found myself seated across the aisle from the loudest and most protesting child on the entire Boeing 747. The little girl gave weary passengers only a brief respite from her shrieking wails and tantrums when she took one mid-air twenty-minute snooze...
Shifting Frequencies
I was disturbed by this commotion and distracted by the frustration I sensed in my fatigued fellow travelers, their exasperation reaching desperate levels. Passengers up and down the aisle were rolling their eyes and sighing. I realized that I was slowly getting pulled into “herd consciousness.” I remembered that I could choose a different response—a more conscious, positive one.
I leaned across the aisle and made eye contact with the screaming little girl who sat between her exhausted mother in the window seat and her more patient grandmother on the aisle.
“Do you want to see something really cool?” I asked, widening my eyes to project a sense of great anticipation and expectation.
The child stopped mid-yelp and looked back at me, her own eyes getting larger.
“Whaaaat? she asked.
I leaned further across the aisle and handed her grandmother my video iPod. “Do you have your own ear phones?” I asked the grandmother, motioning toward the device as I handed it to her. She nodded, yes.
I remembered that I had a little video that I use to bribe my grandchildren to do anything—brush their teeth, get ready for bed—you name it. It shows a parrot singing, I Left My Heart in San Francisco. I took it years ago in a gift shop in Nevada City, CA. For the short remainder of the flight, the pacified little girl watched the parrot sing. She was transfixed—and suddenly silent.
The moment I broke away from the prevailing emotions—the lower frequencies of the herd—there was an instant, discernible change in the energy on the plane, at least one that I could feel throughout the economy section. Frustration and anger shifted to widespread relief and compassion. Passengers turned to smile at me. Then again, they may have simply been relieved to finally get some quiet. Either way, I just wished that I had done it sooner...maybe way back over Newfoundland...
When I returned home, I found an excellent article in the Jan/Feb issue of AARP magazine: We’re Wired to Connect:
The article quotes from Daniel Goleman’s new book, Social Intelligence:
“The brain itself is social—that’s the most exciting finding.” Goleman explains. “One person’s inner state affects and drives the other person. We’re forming brain-to-brain bridges—a two-way traffic system—all the time. We actually catch each other’s emotions like a cold.”
Powerful Antidote
You have an amazing tool at your disposal to use in these challenging times, whether you find ourselves stuck in traffic or standing in longs lines at the post office, grocery store or in airports:
You can shift your own personal frequency from anger, fear and frustration to kindness and compassion. You will have an instantaneous effect on the herd. Remember, there is an antidote you can use, one that will pull you out of negative emotions the most expediently: go to the feeling of gratitude. It works like magic.
Definition of an·ti·dote: 1. a substance that counteracts the effect of a poison or toxin; 2. something that will take away or reduce the bad effects of something experienced earlier.
